Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

My group members are Ben and Sergio. We did a podcast on deja vu and what causes deja vu. We did some research ourselves on the causes of deja vu, and had “guest speakers” on our show come in and talk about the causes of deja vu. We also interviewed two smash scholars and a smash ra on their thoughts on the causes of deja vu.

Here is the Music Player. You need to installl flash player to show this cool thing!

Our research topic question is “What causes deja vu?” We plan to research on the internet about deja vu, and we are going to interview scholars, ra’s, and possibly others to support our main question. The format of our podcast is that of a radio talk show. My partners are Sergio and Ben.

Laura PSA poster

July 13th, 2010

This is the poster that I would like to be graded on. I chose this topic because I feel that it is really important for women especially to be aware of themselves and their drinks when they are in social and public situations. I hope that this poster motivates women to be more cautious when at parties.

Laura PSA poster (extra)

July 13th, 2010

This is the first PSA poster I worked on. I really liked the message being sent across in the poster, but Simon and Trevor suggested that I make another poster. I wouldn’t like this poster to be graded, just appreciated.

PSA Topic Options

July 2nd, 2010

I am thinking about doing a poster on tobacco use prevention, a message to drive people to help clean up the ocean from the BP spill, or a message to drive people to use more public transportation.

Tobacco use prevention is important to me because it is now apparent how smoking effects people in today’s adults. I want my generation to be as healthy as possible, and one way to establish that is by not using tobacco. Imagery for this topic includes cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, smoke, and tobacco farms. The audience I would be targeting would be teenagers.

Helping to clean the oceans after the BP disaster is important to me because it is important to me to preserve what little ocean life we still have. This disaster will effect many unique places in the ocean that are homes to millions of plants and animals. Imagery for this topic includes oil, oceans, ocean life, oil in the ocean, and pollutants in the ocean. The audience that I would be targeting would be people who live in and around the area where the spill occurred.

Taking public transportation is important to me because I feel that it is important for every single person to take steps to reduce their carbon footprint, and one main way to do this is by taking more public transportation. Imagery for this topic includes footprints, buses, bart, muni, and carpooling. My target audience would be anyone who is old enough to take public transportation.

Assignment #1-Crime and Security Messages in the Media

July 1st, 2010

Today our world is seemingly centered around media. We receive all our information through the media, and therefore we trust the media to relay information that is completely true. We also rely on the media to give us information about our safety in the world, whether it be about health or crime. The media is responsible for helping to discourage crime in our communities, however it is also responsible for reporting about crimes that have happened. Today, the media is increasing their ways of crime intervention. Yet the media is also using reports about crime in a way that scares people about crime in our world. There are many different views about media and its involvement in affecting emotions about crime, but the same unanswered questions keep popping up in people’s minds across the world: Is our media helping communities come together to feel safe and protect one another against violence? Or is our media helping to increase fears about crime by blowing crime in today’s world out of proportion?

More and more, the government is setting up programs in communities that are geared toward fighting crime in neighborhoods. These programs consist of volunteers who do many different jobs, but one is putting up neighborhood watch signs. These signs serve as a warning to people, alerting everyone that there is a neighborhood watch program in the neighborhood containing the signs. Most signs usually contain messages like “Neighborhood watch program in place. Members of this neighborhood will not hesitate to call the police if they see any suspicious activity”. These signs serve as a way to try to deter criminals from doing any unlawful acts. They are like advertisements, yet they convey important safety information to their audiences.

However, many people have noticed that in current media, there are always cases where crime seems to be blown out of proportion. Many feel that the media only chooses to report on certain topics, which causes illusions about the real world. One example is that of Robb Shannon’s feelings towards reports about Antigua. Robb Shannon, a reporter for Triton, feels that reports about  crime in Antigua are more extravagant than they need to be. His article claims that even though there have been recent crimes in Antigua, it is far from being a so called by the media “violent city”. So even though reports on crime may sometimes be helpful, those reports tend to install in people a fear of crime in our world, instead of giving people hope to be able to fight this crime.

In conclusion, the media is progressively starting to act in ways to prevent crime. They are using forms of communication such as neighborhood watch signs to decrease crime rates in neighborhoods. By using these signs, the media helps to bring communities together to be safer and more informed about ways in which to stop crime. However, many reports that the media makes about crime can be unhelpful. Sometimes, by excessively reporting about crime in a certain area, the media can spike an unnecessary concern in audiences about crime in our world. Therefore, the media is jointly helping to decrease crime rates in communities, while also unconsciously putting fear about crime in our world in the minds of all its audiences.
