PSA Poster

July 6th, 2010

This is an important issue for me because I want the future generations to be able to live comfortably and not have to worry about issues like pollution.  Also it has such an easy alternative, walking.  This topic should interest young people because it will tell them that they shouldn’t drive everywhere but walk so they don’t hurt the environment.  I want this poster to affect everybody that drives because everybody that drives hurts the environment.  The imagery that represents this is a very polluted city with the words, WALK, DON’T DRIVE, and statistics about how bad driving is compared to walking.

How does news media effect the way we feel about crime and security?

June 29th, 2010

News media plays a big role effecting our sense of crime and security in this country.  The news and media makes home security a necessity.  Everybody has playing on the fear that people want protection by what they hear from outside influences.  Not only criminals for home security, but for national security  with people like Meg Whitman, who is running for governor of California.

In the media, home security is shown to be really important, and without it, your house will get broken into and you will lose everything. Every 15 seconds, someone’s house gets broken into.  People without home security are 2-3 times more likely to get burglarized than people with home security, according to website. But having home security doesn’t discourage burglars from robbing your house.  According to website 73% of burglars said they would rob a house knowing that the house had home security in it.  And according to website, 86% of burglaries happen when people are inside their house so the home security system wouldn’t help that much.

From personal experiences, my neighbors had home security installed in their house and they had immense problems with it.  The home security wasn’t compatible with their house but they weren’t told that until after they signed a contract with the company.  So my neighbors were charged for a home security system that didn’t even work.

Another time news affected the way people have viewed politics is the California Republican primary campaign with Meg Whitman.  Meg Whitman is a candidate for the California governor, along with democrat, Jerry Brown.  Meg Whitman was formally the CEO of eBay before she got into politics.  Meg Whitman was almost chosen by John McCain, to be the vice president instead of Sarah Palin and had bad ideas for the presidential campaign like Sarah Palin.  I was watching a commercial about Meg Whitman and her campaign and she was looking down upon the other politician, Steve Poizner.  The ad was really confusing, because Meg Whitman was talking about “how liberal Steve Poizner was” by bringing in a lot of his liberal ideas in the ad, see video below.  The ideas that Steve Poizner voted for were very good for the common person but in the eyes of Meg Whitman they were very frowned upon.  The decisions made by Steve Poizner were raising taxes and giving money to the Al Gore recount in 2000.  Meg Whitman didn’t support that and out it in her ad.   Meg Whitman eventually won the Republican primary.  Meg Whitman might not have been the best choice for the position but she put fear in the eyes of the voting citizens.

The way the media feels about security is the way the public feels.  The media scares fear into the civilians and the people feel buy into that fear and do what the media wants them to do.  It is a way for the media to dictate what people think and what they feel.  If the media continues to fear the public without intervention, people will continue to be scared into thinking a certain way.
